At the end of Novmber, my Husband started getting quite jealous that I was sewing myself so many nice well fitted pyjamas and asked if he could have some as well! This was a good thing in several ways as, as well as being able to have exactly what he wanted, finding him store bought ones that fit are practically impossible or extortionately priced! The fabric choosing was the easiest, I let him loose on {some} of my {huge} fabric stash and rather predictably he chose some bright sesame street flannel and yellow jersey and told me he'd like the flannel as the arms and trousers of his PJ's. I knew the flannel would be fine for the trousers but did consider for a while how flannel would work as sleeves for a top seeing as most PJ tops are completely jersey but decided to go with it anyway and adapt if needs be. Then came the task of choosing patterns! Despite having made numerous woman and child garments, I had never made anything for my husband or indeed any man! Fortunately {or unfortunately for my bank balance} it happened to be 'Black Friday' and several pattern designers had sales on. After lots of money spent and several hours browsing I came across the Strathcona Henley and decided that was the one for the top and I already had a Simplicity pattern for the bottoms that was suitable for flannel. Strathcona HenleyI made variation 2 of the tee without the placket. My husband's measurements put him in the 'small' size for the top but due to it being for lounge wear and to negate the issue of the sleeves being flannel, I sized up the entire top to a medium. Due to his height, I also added 4" extra length to the body and made the sleeves adding the length of the cuff and an additional 4" also. It sewed up very quickly, with lots of notches included on the pattern to help with seam matching and great instructions. The only thing that I found a little irritating is that all the pattern pieces are printed in full rather than on the fold so there is a LOT of printing/taping/cutting/grain alignment to do. I will be sewing this pattern again with the only improvement being the addition of a seam cover on the back of the neck to cover the serger threads and protect the neck from them rubbing. Lounge PantsI used a paper pattern from Simplicity for the bottoms with the only change being a 5" addition to the inseam length. Again they sewed up very quickly. They are a little on the snug side however with very little shaping at all and he has asked for pockets in a future pair so I think I'll try out a different pattern for them next time. The verdict from hubby was that he wanted more pairs, so watch this space!
