Earlier this year I found some jersey in a sample sale, there was 3m, in just the colours and pattern I am usually drawn to, so it simply HAD to come home with me! I knew I wanted to make a maxi dress with it even though I'd never worn one before, it just told me this is what it needed to be! No more than a week later, on of my favourite designers, Sew Straight & Gather, announced in their tester group that they had plans to re draft and re-release their very first pattern, the girls Uptown Downtown. I instantly went to check it out and not only was the style PERFECT, I could easily fit into the age 14 measurements! It couldn't all have happened more perfectly if I'd have tried to schedule! So here we have my super elegant Uptown Downtown..... Pattern DetailsThe Girls Uptown Downtown is sized for 2-14 years (21.25-33" chest) There are 3 parts of this PDF pattern, the 29 page instructions (includes clickable navigation links to easily get you to the right part of the instructions!), the 30 page main pattern and the 8 page pattern extras. There are options for tank straps, sleeveless, short and 3 quarter sleeves as well as a cowl add on, optional in seam pockets and knee or maxi lengths! The finishes as far as possible are clean with facings included to partially line the bodice. The short sleeves also have a lined option so you can avoid having to hem those too! The pattern itself has layers and both different colours and line styles for each size, so easy printing in black and white or colour. Depending on the size and options chosen you will need to print between 14 and 38 no trim pages and require between 65cm (3/4 yard) and 4m (4.5 yards) of light or medium weight jersey with good recovery. As with the Legends, the designer has taken extra care and time to make sure everything is perfect before re-release as this comes through with the professional feel the files have. My VersionI made the sleeveless age 14 maxi length with cowl and facings. I used almost the full 3m of rayon spandex fabric I had bought but was able to put the cowl and facing pieces within that fabric rather than needing extra as the pattern suggests. I made the dress entirely as per the pattern with no alterations. How does it fit?As you can see from the photos the fit is excellent! Due to the fact this is a girls pattern, it is drafted for slightly less curves so the only things I could have done to improve the fit would have been to grade the waist down a size or 2 to match my measurement and to shape the fabric a little more under my bust but it really isn't essential at all! The ladies size 0-2 is spot on to my measurements so I could make that next time but due to all the printing and taping, I'll probably stick with this! Tester InspirationTerri has put together a blog post with lots of the testers versions, there is loads of inspiration to be had here Project CostFull price pattern - (£4.38) ($6.31 USD) $8 CAD - I received the pattern for free in return for testing Fabric Cost - £10 ($14.40 USD) ($18.25 CAD) Notions/Thread - 50p ($0.72 USD) ($0.91 CAD) Total Cost - £14.88 ($21.43 USD) ($27.15 CAD) Cost to make each additional with similar priced fabric - £10-£11 ($14.40-$15.84 USD) ($18.25-$20 CAD) Both the Ladies Uptown Downtown and the Girls Uptown Downtown are on sale for $5CAD (£2.74! or $3.47 USD) each until 24th April! The Verdict!I am 1000% going to sew more of these up as soon as I have the fabric, I want to try as many of the options as I can! I'm also going to play at making it a top too! I have bought the ladies pattern during this sale so I'll review that and add photos as and when I use it!
